Algorithms in History
Every algorithm was written by someone, somewhere, for a reason. This timeline follows about 120 of them from Egyptian scribes to diffusion models: when each appeared, what social force pushed it into being — taxes, wars, trade, telephones, the Web — what it was first used for, and the fields it later spread to.
Time runs left to right. Each line joins two related algorithms — one built on, rediscovered or combined with the other — and runs from the earlier to the later. Click an algorithm to light up everything it built on and everything that built on it; the chain is listed below in date order. Scroll sideways, or jump to an era.
Each column is one algorithm. A filled dot marks the field it was invented for; rings mark fields it later spread to. Colour is its main social driver. The time axis is stretched after 1950, where most algorithms are. Click a column for details.
